Day 8: Logrono to Navarette (12.6 km/7.5miles)

March 31, 2017

This was a brutal day not only because of the jagermeister but because I was still very hard on myself for losing my debit card as well as allowing myself to drink that much. I was dealing with a lot of nonacceptance and self hatred.

We left town around 11 after sleeping in until about 9 or so. We had a lovely breakfast and went by the Cathedral in Logrono. It was closed so we just had to visit the outside.

(Outside of the Cathedral in Logrono. It was closed 😞 but still a beautiful sight from the outside!)

As we were walking out of town we stumbled upon another Church that had a door open so we went inside. There was something magical about this church. Maybe it was my migraine but it was so quiet and peaceful it brought me to tears. I felt at peace within the walls of this church.

We finally got going around 11:30. I ended up hiking the majority of the day alone, which was much needed.

When I got to town I decided I would get a hotel room alone in order to calm myself down after two nights in a row of poor sleep. Even with the luxurious accommodations, the alcohol the night before prevented me from having a good sleep. And the night before had was when I lost my debit card.

By the time I got settled in my room, had spoken with my parents and taken a shower–I heard familiar voices outside my balcony window. It was a couple members of my Camino family. I instinctively invited one of them, Stephanie, to join me in my room. After a couple of hours of quiet time I was ready to be social again!

We ate our pilgrim dinner (3 courses for €10) with a beautiful view…

(The view from our dinner table!)

And then we went to mass. This was my first time going to mass on the Camino and it was incredible. I felt like I was being hugged the entire time. All the self hatred and embarrassment melted off of me.

We went for a drink after mass (I had a lemon soda, NO alcohol, haha!) and then I slept like a baby.

‘Twas a beautiful day in Spain. It had its lows, especially in the morning, but it also had its highs, just like life. There are always going to be moments we feel happy and sad, because those are polar opposites but the true task is just feel peace throughout. It’s easy to feel peace when we are happy, but the true “test” is feeling peace when sad. Add that to my list of “what do I want to learn on the Camino!” 😉
